Mega tower on 384 wheels

A 52 meter tower weighing 184 metric tons on its way through South Africa on 384 wheels – even the logistics specialists at DB Schenker don’t see such XXL transports every day.

Sasolburg. Weighing 184 metric tons and with a length of 52 meters and a diameter of six meters, the tower for a fertilizer factory in Sasolburg, South Africa, was a real challenge even for the experienced logistics experts at DB Schenker. The tower is the largest single item DB Schenker has transported in South Africa to date.

The tower arrived at the port of Durban by ship. A special 2,000 hp transporter with 384 wheels carried it from South Africa’s east coast to the industrial city of Sasolburg around 600 kilometers away. Bridges had to be moved and cables had to be cut to make way for the transporter. After four weeks on the road, the oversized transport finally reached its destination.

The South African national company of DB Schenker was founded in 1962. Some 1,000 employees in all work at its branch offices in Johannesburg, Durban, East London, Port Elizabeth, Pretoria and Cape Town.
